About solar in Harghita county

Solar panels in Harghita county

Harghita has some of Romania's harshest PV conditions: irradiation around 1,080 kWh/kWp/year, snow loads above 150 kg/m² in many mountain villages, long winters with near-zero yield December–February. That does not mean PV does not work — it means off-grid and hybrid systems (generously battery-equipped) are more common here than elsewhere, particularly in isolated valleys (Bilbor, Tulgheș, Voșlăbeni) where the public grid is fragile and outages are frequent. The capital is Miercurea Ciuc, grid operator DEER. The population is predominantly Hungarian-speaking.

Installer coverage

Fotovol lists 17 AFM Casa Verde-certified installers and 50 ANRE-licensed electricians covering Harghita. Many installers in Miercurea Ciuc and Odorheiu Secuiesc, plus Brașov and Mureș firms covering the county on rotation. See the guide.

Realistic yield with snow and altitude

A 5 kWp system at 1,080 kWh/kWp/year theoretically produces 5,400 kWh, but Harghita-specific snow losses (40–60 days/year) and fog cut realistic output to 4,700–5,100 kWh/year. For typical consumption of 4,500 kWh/year, the system covers demand thinly. For households with water pumps, electric heating, or continuous cold storage, plan 7–10 kWp. Use the calculator.

Snow load: mounting matters

In mountain villages (Lăzarea, Sândominic, Suseni, Sâncrăieni), snow typically accumulates 80–150 cm. That is over 150 kg/m² at peak — beyond the standard mounting-frame calculation. Ask your installer for a structure certified for your zone, not a generic build. Extra cost: RON 200–500 on a 5 kWp system, but a critical difference — an undersized frame fails after 2–3 winters at peak load.

Solar's first steps in Harghita county

PV in Harghita: late, but with autonomy

Harghita entered residential PV later than most counties — the mix of low irradiation, high altitude, and below-average incomes made unsubsidised payback problematic. Notable residential installations only appeared in 2021 with the first Casa Verde Fotovoltaice session. Before that, a handful of off-grid systems sat on isolated cabins, ordered by owners wanting independence from a fragile public grid.

Casa Verde and the economic threshold

With RON 20,000 from AFM, payback drops below 9 years even at 1,080 kWh/kWp/year. The AFM-certified installer list has grown since 2022. See the Casa Verde guide.

What is specific to Harghita: hybrid systems and outages

In isolated valleys (Bilbor, Tulgheș, Voșlăbeni, Vlăhița), the public grid suffers frequent outages — sometimes 5–15 hours per month during winter. For a household with a freezer, central heating pump, and 24/7 internet, outages are a real operational problem, not just an inconvenience. A hybrid system (PV + backup-capable inverter + 10–15 kWh LFP battery) runs EUR 12,000–18,000 for a typical house, but delivers genuine 8–24 hour autonomy depending on load. For a Miercurea Ciuc city house with a stable grid, a simple on-grid system without battery suffices.

Practical decisions

Before requesting a quote, decide whether your local grid is reliable. Ask neighbours, check 12-month outage history. The answer changes the recommended system by 2–3× in price. Browse installers.
