SolarEdge inverters — DC optimisers for shaded roofs
By Fotovol Team·Updated 26 April 2026
Short answer
Israeli company founded in 2006, listed on Nasdaq. Invented DC power optimisers (a small device on each panel that lets it produce optimally even with partial shading). In 2024–2025 the company went through serious financial trouble and slashed prices on existing stock. Technologically excellent, but verify your installer's supply chain — some inverters are resold without official manufacturer support. 12-year standard warranty, extensible.
When to pick it
SolarEdge makes sense when DC optimisers bring real value:
- Roof with partial shading — trees, chimneys, dormers. Optimisers let each panel produce its max independently. Real gain: 15–25% on shaded roofs.
- Segmented roofs with mixed orientations — east and west strings on the same inverter, no loss.
- Granular per-panel monitoring — you see the exact panel-level fault, useful for warranty and diagnostics.
- Systems above 6 kWp — the optimiser overhead (cost + complexity) makes economic sense only above a certain size.
Watch-outs
- "SolarEdge" parallel stock at 40% below market — in 2024–2025 SolarEdge unloaded massive discounts on old stock. Verify on the official portal that your inverter has active firmware and support.
- Inverters without optimisers — you lose the tech's advantage. You're buying an expensive inverter with no differentiator.
- Roofs without shading — on a wide unshaded roof, optimisers add nothing; a normal string inverter (Huawei/Sungrow) is better and cheaper.
