SMA inverters — the "Mercedes" with 25-year support

By Fotovol Team·Updated 26 April 2026

Short answer

SMA Solar Technology, Germany, founded in 1981. Considered the "Mercedes" of inverters — proven reliability, stable software, long-tail support. Standard 5–10 year warranty, extensible to 20. Official presence in Romania through authorised distributors. Priced 30–50% above Mid inverters (Huawei, Sungrow), but for an installation that has to run 25 years without surprises, the gap pays itself back.

When to pick it

SMA is a very long-term investment:

  • Installs that must run 25 years without replacement — the inverter is statistically the first component to fail (10–15 years on Mid). SMAs from 2005 still run in 2026 — a documented track record, not marketing.
  • House with heat pump + EV charger + storage — SMA's integration with Sunny Home Manager is more mature than most competitors.
  • Owners who value stable software — Sunny Portal is robust, no nasty firmware updates that break functionality.

Watch-outs

  • SMA on a small 3–5 kWp Casa Verde system — the cost overhead (EUR 700–1,200 over Sungrow) doesn't amortise on a small system.
  • Old Romanian stock left over post-2024 — SMA Sunny Boy 5.0-1AV-41 is 2020 gen; ask for 2024+ generation (TLST-41, GEN24).
  • Non-authorised distributors — to access the 20-year extended warranty, the install must be done by a certified SMA partner.
