Sharp panels — Japanese pioneer, scaled down in 2026

By Fotovol Team·Updated 26 April 2026

Short answer

Japanese pioneer — first commercial panels in 1963. In 2026 Sharp produces in limited quantities, mostly for the Japanese domestic market. Sporadic availability in Romania through unofficial channels. Solid historic quality, but the lack of an official EU service network makes warranty enforcement awkward. More of a curiosity than a practical choice for a new install.

When to pick it

In 2026, Sharp makes sense only for:

  • Tech collectors who want "the world's first commercial manufacturer" in their portfolio and accept the service overhead.
  • Partial replacements on existing Sharp installs (rare in Romania) — preserves the string's technical coherence.

For ordinary buyers, Tier-1 Chinese alternatives (LONGi, Jinko) offer newer tech at half the price.

Watch-outs

  • "New" Sharp panels through parallel importers — without an official EU network in 2026, the warranty is theoretical.
  • Old stock from 2018–2020 — PERC cells from that era have a worse temperature coefficient than today's TOPCon; in summer you lose 3–5% additional yield vs a Jinko Tiger Neo.
  • "25-year warranty" promises with no Sharp Solar EU office — ask for the contact details of the office that would honour the warranty.
