Canadian Solar panels — durable for harsh climates

By Fotovol Team·Updated 26 April 2026

Short answer

Founded in Canada in 2001, but most production is in China. Listed on Nasdaq. Appreciated for harsh-environment durability (PID, salt mist, ammonia tests). Moderate presence in Romania — slightly higher price than LONGi/Jinko per watt, but a reputation for longevity. Good for mountain or coastal installs.

When to pick it

Canadian Solar has a concrete advantage for specific climates:

  • Mountain regions (Brașov, Suceava, Harghita) — aggressive thermal cycle and snow load testing (5400 Pa on the HiKu series) matters where snow lingers.
  • Black Sea coast (Constanța, Tulcea) — officially tested for PID + marine atmosphere. Sea salt degrades poorly-certified panels in 7–10 years.
  • Roofs near livestock farms or intensive agricultural zones — tested for ammonia atmosphere, which most Chinese Tier-1 don't certify.

Otherwise, for a typical house in Cluj or Bucharest, the higher price doesn't pay off.

Watch-outs

  • "BiHiKu" and "HiKu Black" lines sold at HiKu7 prices — these are simplified, older versions.
  • "35mm hail resistance" promises without written certification — all good panels handle 25mm IEC standard; above that is marketing.
  • Distributors who can't show marine atmosphere certification — marketing without paperwork.
